FASHION LIGHTING

If you study the photos in fashion and glamour magazines, you will notice that the lighting is almost always frontal in nature and very close to the lens/subject axis. (You can determine the position of the lights by looking at the catchlights in the model’s eyes. If the catchlights are close to the pupil, then the light(s) are close to the lens-either slightly above the lens or just to the side of it.) Fashion photographers overcome the lack of roundness and modeling that this type of lighting gives by using makeup to contour the face. Cheekbones are shaded, as is either side of the nose, to give a better sense of roundness and dimension in the face.
